Mercer County Criminal Defense Attorneys

Mercer County is an interesting place to practice criminal law because many government agencies as well as the New Jersey Attorney General's office are based in Trenton and other areas in Mercer County.  In addition, the city of Trenton produces a lot of street crime while the wealthy areas of the county produce a good amount of white collar crime.  While much of the white collar crime is prosecuted in Federal Court, arrests for theft, fraud and other white collar crimes are high.  For example, arrests for gambling offenses were the second highest in the state, only behind Atlantic City. 

Mercer County Court Information

All Indictable Criminal Court matters are held in the Burlington County Courthouse. There are two Courthouses for Mercer County Superior Court. The Criminal Courthouse is located at 209 South Broad Street. The Civil Courthouse is at 175 South Broad Street.

Indictable crimes include Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Burglary, Sexual Assault, Fraud, Forgery, Firearms charges, as well as most Drug/CDS charges. Minor charges such as Harassment, Disorderly Conduct, Simple Assault, Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Resisting Arrest and Obstruction are handled in Municipal Court. Mercer County Crime Statistics

The most recent crime statistics are for 2006. All statistics are from the 2006 Uniform Crime Reports.

VOLUME/RATE

• A total of 9,987 Index offenses were reported for 2006, representing an 11 percent decrease when compared to 2005.
• Violent crime decreased 11 percent and nonviolent crime decreased 12 percent.
• Mercer County's crime rate was 27.8 victims for every 1,000 inhabitants, a 10 percent decrease from 2005.
• Robbery decreased 14 percent while Rape increased 22 percent.
• During the commission of Index crimes, a total of $14.8 million in cash and/or property was stolen; twenty-nine percent was
recoverd.

ARRESTS/CLEARANCES

• Police arrested 24,010 persons for criminal offenses, a 14 percent increase compared to 2005.
• Adult arrests increased 12 percent and juvenile arrests increased 22 percent.
• The total clearance rate for Index crimes was 18.3 percent; juveniles accounted for 28 percent of those clearances.
