What are Motor Vehicle Points in New Jersey?

If you plea guilty or our found guilty of a moving violation listed in the table below, the State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will assess points to your driving record.

How do points affect my driver's license?

If you get six or more points within three years on your current driving record, you will be assessed a surcharge. If you get 12 or more points on your current driving record, your license will be suspended. You will receive a notice of scheduled suspension by mail. Call us immediately if you receive a suspension notice.

How do points affect my insurance?

In New Jersey, insurance companies use insurance eligibility points. Generally, these points are the same as the points assessed by the MVC. However, some moving violations such as DWI and driving while suspended do not result in MVC points but they will result in insurance eligibility points.

So what are insurance eligibility points?

Insurance Eligibility Points are used by insurance carriers to determine the level of premiums that an insured must pay for liability coverage. A total of 7 or fewer points will determine the tier of coverage for which an insured may qualify when purchasing insurance in the NJ voluntary market. An accumulation of more than 7 insurance points will disqualify you from purchasing insurance in the voluntary market. However, you may attempt to purchase insurance on an assigned risk basis through the New Jersey Automobile Insurance Plan (N.J.P.A.I.P), although the premiums for even basic, minimal coverage will be more expensive than the rates available in the voluntary market. Thus, it is extremely important to protect your record or you could be paying for years.
