License Suspension

A license suspension can be costly.  Whether your license is suspended for a week or a year, there is a good chance that your insurance company will drop you.  Even if they don't, your rates may substantially increase.  In addition, if you drive while your license is suspended, you could face additional suspension and jail time.

There are numerous ways to get your license suspended:

  • 12 or more points
  • Failure to appear in court
  • Failure to pay court fines
  • Failure to pay surcharges
  • Conviction for driving with a suspended license
  • Conviction for DWI
  • Conviction for driving without insurance
  • Conviction for CDS in a motor vehicle
  • Conviction for drug related criminal offense
  • Conviction for certain other criminal offenses
  • Failure to provide proof of insurance
  • Physical or mental disqualification
  • Reckless driving
  • Excessive speeding
  • Vehicle abandonment on a public highway
  • Fault in a fatal accident
  • Violation during Mandatory Probation Period

To get your license restored, you must pay a $100 restoration fee, receive a written notice, and then follow the steps for an ordinary license renewal.  Many people make the mistake of driving before they receive a written restoration notice.  Furthermore, this page if for informational purposes only.  Contact the MVC directly to get all of the information you need.

Mandatory Probation Period

A mandatory probation period starts after completion of the probationary driver program, driver improvement program, official warning issued by the MVC or restoration after points or persistent violator suspension.  During this period, a violation during the first six months will result in an additional suspension of 90 days.  A violation occurring withing 7 to 9 months will result in 60 days suspension while a violation occurring between 9 and 12 months results in a 45 day suspension.

The penalties increase if you receive a second violation.  The same time frames apply, but the suspensions increase to 180, 120 and 90 days respectively.
