New Jersey Criminal Record Expungement Attorneys

Having an arrest or criminal conviction on your record could haunt you forever. Applications for schools, jobs and military service will ask you about your record. The purpose of New Jersey's expungement law is to give a person who has either one or very few convictions a fresh start with a clean record, as law enforcement agencies are required to keep a record private after expungement.

At Jack Venturi Law, we can help you seek an expungement. At your free initial consultation, our attorneys will discuss the law with you and see if you are eligible for expungement. If you are eligible, we will prepare and file your petition for expungement and skillfully handle the rest of the process.

To discuss your expungement options with one of our Princeton or New Brunswick expungement attorneys, call us toll free at 866-448-8598.

What Can Be Expunged?

In New Jersey, the following matters are eligible for expungement:

  • Felony convictions
  • Misdemeanor convictions
  • Municipal ordinance convictions
  • Arrest records
  • Entry into PTI program
  • Entry into a conditional discharge program
  • Guilty pleas
  • Guilty verdicts

The Expungement Process

The petition for expungement must be filed in the New Jersey Superior Court in the county where the arrest or prosecution took place. Copies of the petition for expungement are also sent to any criminal justice agency that played any role in the person's arrest or conviction such as the police, probation division, county jail or prison. A judge then decides whether the person should be granted an expungement order. An expungement order means that, with some exceptions, the criminal proceedings never happened. It also allows the person to fill out school, job and military applications truthfully without having to reveal an arrest or conviction.
